Developing Your Unique Guitar Style: Be an Original
Hi Alien Guitarists,
Finding your unique style is one of the most rewarding parts of guitar playing. It’s what sets you apart and defines your voice. Here are ways to develop your unique guitar sound, drawing from different influences and techniques.
-
Combine Influences: Everyone starts by emulating their favourite players, but blending multiple influences can lead to something truly unique. For instance, you might take the rhythmic precision of James Hetfield, the melodic lines of David Gilmour, and the phrasing of John Mayer to create your own style. The Fretboard Mastery Course offers exercises that guide you in weaving different influences together.
-
Experiment with Techniques: From alternate picking and hybrid picking to legato and fingerstyle, there are countless techniques to explore. For example, try hybrid picking (using both pick and fingers) to create rhythmic variety in your playing. Adding techniques like slides, bends, and vibrato can also give your playing more personality.
-
Be Fearless: Don’t hesitate to experiment with new techniques, tones, or even effects. Originality often comes from pushing boundaries and trying something unconventional, so explore effects like delay, reverb, and modulation to see how they impact your sound.
Developing a unique style is an ongoing journey. The AGS Fretboard Mastery Course provides structured guidance to help you create a sound that's distinctly yours.
Peace, Rob Lobasso 👽🎸🤘
